Preserving Our Stories at Historic Sotterley Plantation

Research
Research is at the heart of Sotterley Plantation’s mission. Research drives the stories, tours, programs, and exhibits offered to the public. Sotterley welcomes research finds from volunteers, descendants, and professionals.

Oral History
Oral history and tradition is another important piece of the historic puzzle that must be acknowledged and used when researching and interpreting the past, especially for disenfranchised groups where documented history was not possible, allowed, or saved. The oral history and traditions of descendants and those that lived in Sotterley’s past, gives insight, preserves culture, gives relevance, and connects Sotterley to generations today. Sotterley Plantation encourages and uses the oral traditions and histories of its people and encourages every family to record their own histories and traditions as a gift to their descendants and their communities.

Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project
On November 12, 2012, Sotterley Plantation and the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project , along with descendants and community leaders and members, held a remembrance ceremony for those who had their freedom stolen and were transported against their will across the Atlantic from the West Coast of Africa to the Patuxent River. What was to become known as Sotterley Plantation was a landing site for those that survived to a life of struggle in bondage under the slave system in America.
