Conservation of Sotterley Plantation's Historic Resources

Conservation of Sotterley’s historic resources ensures the preservation of our site, and one of the most important ways to ensure the conservation of any historic site is ongoing maintenance. Maintenance efforts can help Sotterley preserve its unique resources, and when maintenance needs are met, more drastic restoration measures can often be eliminated or reduced. While fulfilling maintenance needs is not as costly as undergoing restoration, it still requires the support of a generous community by donations of funds and in-kind support to meet these needs.

Building Maintenance
With over 20 historic buildings, even simple maintenance can prove daunting and expensive. Generous donations help Sotterley take care of some of the critical maintenance needs such as roof repair and staining, painting, HVAC repair and upgrades, pest treatment and control, gutter replacement, routine system inspections, and so much more. Generous donations help Sotterley take care of some of the critical maintenance needs such as roof repair and staining, painting, HVAC repair and upgrades, pest treatment and control, gutter replacement, routine system inspections, and so much more. While not as “sexy” as more full-blown restorations, maintenance on Sotterley’s buildings help us conserve the buildings nonetheless and often defer or eliminate the need to resort to a much more costly or invasive restoration project.

Grounds Maintenance
Whether strolling in our carefully tended Colonial Revival Garden, sitting on the Portico overlooking scenic fields and the Patuxent River, walking along miles of nature trails, or picnicking under a tree, visitors are both awed and soothed by Sotterley’s tranquil and breathtaking setting.Sotterley Plantation’s landscape is known for its beauty. Whether strolling in our carefully tended Colonial Revival Garden, sitting on the Portico overlooking scenic fields and the Patuxent River, walking along miles of nature trails, or picnicking under a tree, visitors are both awed and soothed by Sotterley’s tranquil and breathtaking setting. Upkeep of the grounds and landscape to meet the needs of the thousands of students and guests who visit each year is a time consuming and costly job, and general donations paired with targeted gifts ensure that this important work will be taken are of.

Following Hurricane Irene which hit in August 2011, Sotterley established an Adopt-a-Tree Fund. Individuals or organizations could choose to either adopt an entire tree or simply make a donation of any size to the tree fund. Plantings and new trees are now dotting the site due to contributions to this fund, and the healing has begun following the storm’s devastation.Special Projects: Adopt-a-Tree and Sotterley’s Landscape Fund

Contributions to this fund offer flexibility in how moneys are allocated, and can help to cover not only the cost of new trees and shrubs, but such things as equipment rental, putting in new pathways, etc. With the support of the generous community, the hope of Historic Sotterley, Inc. is to ensure that we maintain our beautiful and unique landscape so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come.
